All Aboard! Island Time, Sept. 2

All Aboard! Island Time, Sept. 2

September 2, 2021
A three-day weekend on the Vineyard is summer’s last gift before we move into fall. It’s true that we have the Derby, the MV Oyster Fest, the Wind Festival and more to look forward to in the coming weeks, but they don’t quite have the laid-back vibe of digging your toes in the sand or hunting for beach plums. Therefore, flip-flops and sun hats are required gear this weekend. Then take in a film, explore the Artisans Festival or stroll the Arts District, and be sure to get that lobster roll or ice cream cone you’ve been craving all summer.
For more ideas, read on, and be sure to check out The Complete Martha’s Vineyard Calendar for all the events and activities happening soon.
By the way, our Oyster columnist is off today, back next week!
Late summer and early fall is the perfect time to plant. Thankfully, Polly Hill Arboretum’s Fall Plant Sale opens on Saturday, September 4 from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Folks can purchase a variety of trees, shrubs, perennials and Island natives. The sale will continue through Columbus Day Weekend.
And for those counting down the days until the annual Derby, score some gear to use for the fishing tournament during the Martha’s Vineyard Surfcasters Association’s Used Tackle Sale on Saturday, September 4 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School (MVRHS) in Oak Bluffs. All proceeds benefit MVRHS scholarship funds.
The Oak Bluffs Arts District — on Dukes County Avenue — is having an Art Stroll on Saturday, September 4 from 4 to 7 p.m. Patrons can view artwork in the galleries along the route, and will also have the opportunity to watch a Dance Performance by Tessa Permar beginning at 4:30 p.m.
Also during the stroll, Habitat for Humanity of Martha’s Vineyard will be holding an auction from 6 to 7 p.m. to benefit the nonprofit. Items include twelve antique chairs decorated and reimagined by local artists, an outdoor shower designed and built by Hutker Architects and more.
From furniture and clothing to ceramics and jewelry — There’s something for everyone to purchase during the Vineyard Artisans Labor Day Weekend Festival. (Holiday shopping, anyone?) The three-day show kicks off on Friday, September 3 from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Agricultural Hall in West Tisbury, and continues on Saturday, September 4 and Sunday, September 5 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The Martha’s Vineyard Film Society’s annual International Film Festival kicks off on Tuesday, September 7 at 7:30 p.m. with The Woman Who Ran (South Korea). The festival will run through Sunday, September 12 and will have a hybrid option for those wanting to watch from the comfort of their own homes.
Other movies in this year’s lineup include Wife of a Spy (Japan), There is No Evil (Iran) and Sweat (Poland).
A new exhibit at the Martha’s Vineyard Museum in Vineyard Haven opens on Wednesday, September 8 titled The Reverend William Jackson – For God & Liberty. The exhibition will shine a light on the life of a Black man who worked to end slavery, preached the word of God, served in the Union Army during the Civil War, and was an early member of the summer community at the Camp Ground in Oak Bluffs. For even more on his fascinating life, read Skip Finley’s article for Martha’s Vineyard Magazine — A Bell of Freedom.
