MV Sharks Support Hospice of Martha's Vineyard
Martha's Vineyard - Hospice of Martha's Vineyard will be selling sell season tickets for the MV Sharks games at a discounted price to benefit their organization. Season tickets, normally $100 will be sold for $80, half of which will be donated directly to Hospice of Martha's Vineyard. Children's tickets for those under 13 years of age are available for $40.
Purchased individually adult tickets are $5 per game and child (under 13 years of age) tickets are $3 per game. MV Sharks games, played by college students from around the country, provide a fun activity for Island families, their guests and summer visitors. To purchase tickets go to the "News & Events" section or the calendar section (July 15th) of the Hospice website. There will also be an opportunity to purchase tickets at the Memorial Day OB Road Race registration area or directly through Hospice of Martha's Vineyard by contacting a fundraising committee member or calling the office at 508-693-0189. News from the MV Film Society & Festival
Martha's Vineyard - The MV Film Society continues the fundraising efforts for its new theater, seeking to raise the remaining $180,000 in its capital campaign by July 15. To review their donor packet (click here ). The organization will also be a presence at the Taste of the Vineyard on June 14, where they’ll be giving out free samples of concession stand snacks and movie tickets.
In anticipation of September’s MV Film Festival, The Film Society is offering a preview screening of several film festival short films and a festival feature film, live music, and wine tasting on June 29th at Suffolk University‘s Modern Theatre, 525 Washington Street, Boston, MA. The program begins at 5:30 pm. Discounts will be available to both MV Film Society members and Suffolk University students with ID. For information contact rich@mvfilmsociety.com or 508-696-9369.
Tapas Nights Return
Martha's Vineyard -Beginning Thursday May 3, 2012 the Lambert's Cove Inn will again be serving its Tapas Night menu every Thursday throughout the spring and fall.
Popular throughout Europe in bars and restaurants, tapas are appetizers or
small bites designed to be shared with friends. Chef Max's menu of small plates range in price from
$6 - $18 so that everyone may order a variety, sample everything and create an entire meal.
The Lamberts Cove Inn is open for dinner on Friday & Saturday nights, and will be adding nights as the season progresses. Service at 5:30 pm and reservations, 508-693-2298,

Pilot Plots Take Off at The FARM Institute
Martha's Vineyard - Ground has been prepared, deer fence installed and five peopleselected innovate crops or growing methods on one-acre parcels at The FARM Institute in Edgartown. With funding from the Northeast Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education program, a branch of the U.S.D.A., the five farmers will have access to water, a small stipend for seeds or equipment, and support from Farm Institute staff and each other. The project aims to provides a low-risk way to try new products for Vineyard markets, or ways to make growing more efficient and profitable.Thus far, the following projuects are underway: Alex Rentumis and his partner Katrina Nevin will be planting an oilseed crop, probably sunflowers, for use in bio-diesel fuels and for human consumption. They are interested in finding out whether the soil and climate at Katama will support a crop that can be harvested and pressed for a clean fresh oil. Dan and Anna Merhalski are experimenting with the financial sustainability of a small-scale market garden as a possible way to encourage more food production on limited acres. They plan to try quinoa, barley and hops, along with heirloom tomatoes and other vegetables and to bring in some beehives as well.
Patrick Brown will explore ways to remineralize Island soils with pond fines, glacial gravel powders and other materials, and observing the nutritional output from these efforts. Teri Praskach will be growing flowers and herbs using cover crops between the rows. The cover crops will be tilled in at two to three week intervals and the effects on weed control and soil health will be measured. Lily Walter will be using her plot to compare no till, reduced till and conventional tillage methods in productivity for a vegetable garden.
Garden manager Rebecca Sanders will support the farmers with her soil science background.
