Menemsha Harbor
Stroll dockside for an up close look at the working fishing boats tied up along the pier. If you ever wondered what the life of a commercial fisherman is like the worn lines and heavy rigging will answer the question. Just across the road, the Home Port offers fresh seafood to go out its back door, on its porch and in its full service restaurant. Take your pick and if you opt for takeout, head for the nearby Menemsha beach and watch the sunset over the water to the west, a rare sight on the eastern seaboard. Just on the other side of Circuit Ave., The Martha's Vineyard Campmeeting Association Campground offers an oasis of calm. The colorful carpenter gothic 'gingerbread' cottages hark back to the 19th century when they were built to replace the revival meeting tents for some of the Island's first wave of summer visitors. At the center of the 'circle' is the Tabernacle which hosts many summer events including Wednesday evening Community Sings, films, concerts and most notably, the yearly Illumination Night during which hundreds of lanterns are lit to illuminate surrounding the cottages. Lovely cottage gardens add to the charm of this historic portion of Oak Bluffs.
