Vineyard Artisans Festivals


The Vineyard Artisan Festivals is a weekly juried Art Show to support and promote fine art and crafts hand-made by Islanders. From traditional crafts handed down for many generations to newly inspired, each week the public can meet over 60 Island Artists. Polly Hill Arboretum


Crisscrossed by old stonewalls surrounding open meadows the Polly Hill Arboretum is home to a collection of more than 1600 woody plants that Polly Hill began planting from seed in 1958. At any season the Arboretum offers beauty, tranquility and abounds with horticultural and botanical rarities! $5 suggested donation - members & children under 12 free. Illumination Night

Martha's Vineyard Camp Meeting Grounds. Usually last part part of August; date not revealed until a week before the event. Remembered for a lifetime: after Sing-along concert, Japanese lantern is lit by oldest resident of the community. Memorial Wharf - Edgartown

As Main Street swerves into Water Street and heads in the direction of the Chappy ferry, Memorial Wharf overlooks the goings on in the harbor. Sail boats, fishing craft and the Chappy ferry animate the waters. A favorite spot from which to watch the July 4th Fireworks, enjoy lunch from the nearby Quarterdeck, or jig for squid at sundown. Norton Point

Cape Poge is home of 14 miles of moderate hiking trails. With its remote setting it can serve as your peaceful getaway from Martha's Vineyard busy summer atmosphere. Trails lead to the Cape Poge Lighthouse, the Cape Poge Bay, as well as beach front locations and many other Chappaquiddick destinations. Chappaquiddick is easily accessible by the "on-time ferry" (Chappaquiddick Ferry) that leaves out of Edgartown. Seasonal restrooms; picnic tables; parking available at Wasque and Mytoi Garden.

Cape Poge

Aquinnah Cultural Center

The Aquinnah Wampanoag's 485-acre reservation is located within the town of Aquinnah at the southwestern tip of Martha's Vineyard. The Tribe was added to the the Federally Recognized Tribes list in 1987. Its Cultural Center provides services to the Tribal community and sponsors events, programs and exhibits relating to tribal culture which are open to the Tribe and to the public. One of its most popular annual events is the Legend of Moshup pageant during which its founding legend is re-enacted under the stars by tribal members. Martha's Vineyard Campmeeting Association

Just on the other side of Circuit Ave., The Martha's Vineyard Campmeeting Association Campground offers an oasis of calm. The colorful carpenter gothic 'gingerbread' cottages hark back to the 19th century when they were built to replace the revival meeting tents for some of the Island's first wave of summer visitors. At the center of the 'circle' is the Tabernacle which hosts many summer events including Wednesday evening Community Sings, films, concerts and most notably, the yearly Illumination Night during which hundreds of lanterns are lit to illuminate surrounding the cottages. Lovely cottage gardens add to the charm of this historic portion of Oak Bluffs.

Menemsha Harbor

Stroll dockside for an up close look at the working fishing boats tied up along the pier. If you ever wondered what the life of a commercial fisherman is like the worn lines and heavy rigging will answer the question. Just across the road, the Home Port offers fresh seafood to go out its back door, on its porch and in its full service restaurant. Take your pick and if you opt for takeout, head for the nearby Menemsha beach and watch the sunset over the water to the west, a rare sight on the eastern seaboard. You'll find Larson's Seafood nearby offering lobster in the rough just across from the fishing docks.

Riverhead Field Frisbee Golf Course

Located approximately 1.1 miles from the intersection of the Edgartown Vineyard Haven Road and Barnes Road. Approaching from Vineyard Haven, make a right onto Barnes Road at the 4-way stop. Enter a dirt parking lot w/ split rail fence on the right at gate 15. The dirt course is mostly flat and somewhat wooded. Free and open to the public, sunrise to sunset daily.

Long Point Wildlife Refuge

Long Point offers easy hiking with a two mile trail that borders Middle Point, Long Cove, and Tisbury Great Ponds. With sheltered salt and fresh water ponds as well as an ocean border Long Point is perfect for a all day excursion. Because of its beach front location Long Point is an extremely popular summer destination although it is also popular among bird watchers and nature lovers alike off season. Long Point

Mytoi Japanese Gardens

Experience an intimate Japanese style garden characterized by natural serenity. Footpaths leading past a birch walk, camellia dell, stone garden, and hillside garden as wells a .5 mile trail through a pitch pine forest leading to the salt marshes of Poucha Pond. The entrance to the Salt Marsh Trail is located across the street from the Mytoi Garden. These trails offer easy walking and beautiful scenery. Just under a 3 mile bike ride from the "on-time ferry" (Chappaquiddick Ferry) leaving from Edgartown. Limited parking; free to all; public restrooms.

Mytoi

Gay Head Cliffs at Aquinnah

At Martha's Vineyard's westernmost tip in Aquinnah, the Gay Head Cliffs thrust into the sea. The Cliffs themselves are striated with bright red, yellow and orange bands of color each delineating an era of their long history. From the top of Cliffs, the horizon offers a view of the Elizabeth Islands, spectacular sunsets and the South Shore beaches. Nearby the Gay Head light, which is open to visitors June-Sept, orients sailors to their location as they approach land. The Cliffs also offer a variety of shops and restaurants where you can enjoy a local treats including chowder, lobster and great home-made pies.
