Paninis Please

Monday, September 28th, 2009

Living two blocks from Main Street in Vineyard Haven is incredibly handy.  I’m able to walk to the library, the grocery store, the pharmacist and my new favorite place for paninis.  Beetlebung Coffeehouse on State Road is a perfect destination for a latte or pressed sandwich.  I’ve now gone two weekends in a row and can’t say enough about their panini’s.  A nice variety of toppings and bread.  My favorite is the hog island which has ham, Swiss cheese, tomato and honey mustard dressing.  Ridiculously good.  Made fresh to order and they give you a bag of chips to round out the experience.  What more could a girl ask for?

The coffee house itself is very comfy and warm with hardwood floors and lots of space to sit and work on your laptop or people watch.  Lots of characters pass by the window and I enjoy watching them as I wait for my sandwich.  There is a cool soundtrack playing in the background that will make you feel like a hipster at any age.

Their baristas are well trained and can make pretty much any combination or caffeine level you find yourself needing.  Daily specials for drinks and food keep me curious to check in on them frequently.  Personal size Pizzas are served after 4 pm and the toppings and combos are incredible in their variety.

It’s nice to have a place to run in and grab a hot lunch or an afternoon pick me up of coffee or tea. And don’t forget to check out their dry goods store on Main Street after lunch.  You can pick up t-shirts and souvenirs to prove you were there.   Beetlebung Coffee House has a won a place on my walking tour of Vineyard Haven.

Martha’s Vineyard Moves Into October

Monday, September 28th, 2009

Maybe it’s the influence of the slightly cooler temperatures whetting our appetites, or maybe it’s the sight of all those yummy just-harvested veggies at farm stands that’s ramping up the Island’s interest in food.  But whatever the cause, eating is certainly moving into the spotlight in the coming weeks.

From The Beach Plum in Menemsha to the Lambert’s Cove Inn in West Tisbury and  from Deon’s in OB to The Grill on Main in Edgartown prix fixe dinner specials abound.

Mediterranean
continues to offer it’s $2 tapas in its comfy bar from 5-7 pm, Sunday through Thursday.  $10 gets you five tempting tastes that tally up to a light meal, add a few more and you’ve grazed your way through dinner. (Tempus fugit! Chesca’s closes on October 11th - satisfy your bento box cravings now.)

Events around Island also reflect the Island’s fall feeding frenzy.  Détente kicks off the month on October 1st with one of its spectacular wine-tasting dinners.  If you remember these from last year you’re probably already running to your calendar to save the date.  Following close on its heels on October 2nd and 3rd with a different take on dining is the annual Living Local Harvest Fest.  Community potluck, cider pressing, a look at wild edibles, bee-keeping and gardening is just some of the hands-on fun revolving around sustainable agriculture that will be explored.  This is one of those quintessential Island events you won’t want to miss.

In the same October 3 time slot, Jan Buhrman of Kitchen Porch Catering offers a seminar focusing on whole grains.  Held from 9 am-noon, you can still make it over to the Harvest Fest for the afternoon and participate in the potluck with your new-found skills with cereal foods.

As the month progresses, Featherstone’s Art of Chocolate fundraiser (October 9-11) and the Martha’s Vineyard Food and Wine Festival (October 16-18) will pique the Island’s culinary appetite. But these are feasts for another day.  In the meantime you can still catch Meryl Streep as American food icon Julia Child in summer foodie favorite, Julie and Julia at the movies.  Or pick up the book at Bunch of Grapes, still a great beach read…Bon Appétit!

Autumn Comes to MV

Tuesday, September 22nd, 2009

Welcome autumn on September 22! Though the season has changed except for the calendar notation you’d never know it….temperatures continue to top the 70 degree mark and so those of us still on Martha’s Vineyard continue to savor the Island’s endless summer for at least a while longer.

Visiting MV along with the folks doing bridge work between OB and Edgartown are the portable traffic lights pictured here. The lights are getting quite a bit of local attention on the Island where true traffic lights are as rare as the long-extinct heath hen.

Spending time outdoors kayaking, biking and sailing is even more fun now with the moderating temperatures than in the summer’s high season.  Up at the Yard, the schedule of first rate dance performances have not missed a beat either. Brian Dendy fires up the stage this weekend followed next week by the Bessie Schonberg Choreographers’ Residency The Island’s art galleries too continue to generate interest: stop by Warren Gaines’ Gallery in Nevin Square between 6 and 9 pm and watch one of the artist’s watercolors take shape right before your eyes.  At Featherstone Center for the Arts  have a look at the Wood Furniture Show that opened just last week and runs through October 7. Just because we live on an Island is no reason to neglect joining with film lovers in some 171 cities spanning four continents to judge the 12 finalists films in the Manhattan Short Film Festival. Brought to you by the MV Film Society on September. 26.

Or take advantage of the crystalline weather conditions: visit the Cape Pogue Lighthouse for the Trustees of Reservations’ 90-minute tour.  With it’s 150 year history, this wooden lighthouse has lots of tales to tell complements of the Trustees’ guide.  Ask about transportation to the Lighthouse from the Chappy ferry when you register.

On a more somber note:  This coming week - Friday, September 25 to be exact - marks the last of the much-loved Grace Church Lobster Rolls for 2009.  Don’t miss the chance for a last taste of summer.

MV Rocks On

Monday, September 14th, 2009

(Monday, September 13 through Monday, September 20)

It was a great weekend for the film folks!
The MV International Film Festival held its 4th annual
weekend of movies from around the world and theaters
were packed. Click here to see photos from the
opening night pre-party and if you missed it this year,
be sure to mark you calendar for next year’s festival.

Moving beyond mid-month, the Island is staying busy
and beautiful…Lots of people still around on weekends
enjoying the out of doors as the beach days keep
coming.  The Striped Bass and Bluefish Derby is off
and running with fishing poles atop and out the back
of many-a truck.  ‘Gone fishing’ signs decorate doors
around town and will probably multiply as the
competition intensifies.  Out at Nectar’s the beat goes
on with Monday’s being Locals Night and a ‘Gravy Cup’
Whiffle Ball Tournie on tap this week on the 15th
followed close at the heels by an End of Season Beach
Blowout the next day.

The weekend will host Oak Bluffs’ annual
Tivoli Day Street Fair
…a great time to do some shopping,
noshing and catching up with friends and neighbors.  For
something new, you’ll want to check out the first
Martha’s Vineyard Songwriters Festival featuring
pop and
country live music line-ups. Catch Jeff Cohen, Kim Carnes,
Paul Overstreet and other favorites at this two-day event.
Enjoy the sunshine!

Beyond Labor Day

Tuesday, September 8th, 2009

Though Labor Day is traditionally considered to be the end of summer, apparently no one shared this thought with those of us on this side of  the Sound — on Martha’s Vineyard we’re still in vacation mode.

Beach weather is forecast for the holiday weekend and beyond. Meanwhile out at Nectar’s, the beat goes on with three nights of reggae over the labor day weekend.  Jan Buhrman of Kitchen Porch Catering hosts a paella dinner on the beach on Friday the 4th.  Guest list will be limited to 20, so if you haven’t signed up and want to go do it now!  Admission is $150.  Is sailing is more your style? Tall-ship Amistad is in port over the holiday weekend and two public sails are scheduled.  If you haven’t been out to the FARM Institute and experienced their Corn Maze yet, now would be a great time - though this event continues to mid-October.

Hot on the heels of the 3-day weekend, the 4th annual Martha’s Vineyard International Film Festival kicks off with an opening cocktail reception on the roof of the Mansion House and  Sita Sings the Blues on Sept 10. The week continues with more great films and several consecutive nights of serious partying at Che’s Lounge in Vineyard Haven. As the movie excitement wanes the pace picks up on the Oak Bluffs waterfront from 1-4 pm at the IAHF’s annual Shucking Contest where nimble-fingered seafood shuckers show off how its done while raising money for affordable housing on Martha’s Vineyard - faster than you can say ‘aw shucks.’

Exploring Chilmark

THE WEEK AHEAD at MVOL.com
(Tuesday, September 1 through Monday, September 7)

Welcome to September!  With a ‘bonus’ week sandwiched between the end of August and Labor Day this year, Week Ahead kicks back with some photos of ways to make the most of  Summer 2009.
Don’t miss a minute!

Martha's Vineyard
Following last week’s Presidential visit, Week Ahead thought a look around the Island town of Chilmark, home the summer White House, would be fun.

Martha's Vineyard
Surf’s up and the water’s fine on the Island’s Atlantic-facing south shore.

Martha's Vineyard
Picnic benches, tennis, basketball and more…out back at the Chilmark Community Center and the Chilmark Library when you need a break from the beach.

Martha's Vineyard
Shop for beautiful hand made blankets and sweaters. A true Island treasure, these are crafted from the wool of the sheep you see grazing on Chilmark’s beautiful rolling fields.
(Note the stone wall…it is typical of this farming community’s historic means of enclosure.)
