Hypothetically, if I was told that I needed to pack up and move off the Vineyard tomorrow morning but could eat a last meal anywhere I wanted, there is no question in my mind that Zephrus would reserve a table with my name on it.
Zephrus at the Mansion Housewould be reserving a table in my name.
My absolute favorite meal of all time is a cheeseburger and fries and my obsession with this meal has become an all consuming pasttime. I have top ten lists from my travels around the country and world as well as lists for island restaurants and Zephrus tops the list of my island eateries. I survey friends, co-workers and strangers on the ferry, constantly updating and arranging my list with their list.
I’m not sure how to explain how well the bun, cheese and grass fed beef hug each other into hand-held love bites or how the hand-cut fries are like the champagne with which you toast newlyweds. Sure, you could get married without the bubbly, but why would you?
The bun is soft, flavorful and knows that its only job is to bring together the cheese and patty. It understands this well and never ever tries to upstage the main act or bring too much attention to itself and yet the show couldn’t go on without it.
I opt for Swiss but any cheese will work so don’t be bashful you cheddar lovers and provolone admirers. Zephrus melts the cheese so that it connects and becomes one with the patty, never spilling over into a gooey mess. It also maintains its shape but not so much that you wonder if the cheese has some kind of attitude and isn’t a team player.
And the patty, oh the patty, grass fed with the sweet stalks of New England meadows. This is why cows were invented. Should I come back as an animal in my next life make me a grass fed cow and let me bring smiles and full bellies to all.
Let us not forget the potato, the mighty potato whose job is to crisp in the fryer and lay in an aesthetically pleasing pile next to the beautiful burger. And the Oscar for best supporting actor goes to….the Zephrus fries.
I am a burger purist and by that I mean please don’t embarrass my burger with tomatoes, lettuce and onions. There are those of you out there who feel the need for these accessories and by all means please indulge but maybe try it once without and get the real experience of a burger.
I have to give Zephrus my highest burger rating: 4 buns!

If you are a Martha’s Vineyard resident and a parent of school-age children you already know about The Mass Exodus. That’s right, things will be even quieter the last week of the month when most Vineyard families abandon home and hearth.
The school system is kind enough to realize we all need a little change of scenery which translates into warmth and sunshine (read: BEACH!). We Islanders love our beaches but let’s face it the wind is just a bit biting and the water uninviting here in February.
My research - OK, it’s just talking to the other moms at after-school activities but the most accurate I’ve found - shows most Vineyarders head south to either Florida or the Carribbean. Those white sands and warm, crystal waters beckon.
My research has been so productive. I get the scoop on everything from the best rental deals, family restaurants, sailing charters, quiet vs. tourist spots and secret snorkeling coves. By and large the best advice I’ve come across is ParkSleepFly.
What a great idea! ParkSleepFly hotels offer deals that include lodging, airport shuttle and free parking for up to 14 days. That’s right, no parking in the ferry lot or begging a ride for your and all the kidgear, not to mention the ferry-to-bus-to-airport stress and expense. The hotels offer shuttle service and most are the family friendly type that offer pools and complimentary breakfast.
I don’t know why I didn’t discover ParkSleepFly earlier. We usually head into Boston the day before a trip to reduce the travel stress but for less than the price of a downtown hotel we park the car and it’s waiting safe and sound for our return!
I know it sounds as though I’m more excited about the ParkSleepFly aspect of the trip. Don’t be fooled, I’m looking forward to Gram and Papa taking the kiddos and having some quality sun-time with the Hubby. We all know however, it’s the beginning of the trip that can set the mood. Packing the car once and plugging the kiddos into the DVD player on the way to Boston sets just the relaxing note for The Mass Exodus as far as I’m concerned!

 Steve "before" photo
_Today I spent a fun day with our MVOL “Make Over Your Man” contest winner Steve Yeomans and his adorable girlfriend Lauri Bradway, who admitted she basically had to drag him kicking and screaming to today’s hair appointment. Maggie’s Salon In Vineyard Haven was our first stop and Steve proved what a great sport he was in the salon hotseat. Hint – there was definitely a lot of hair left on the floor. After many oohs and ahs from the salon staff and clients who witnessed the transformation, we sprinted off to The Green Room on Main Street where Steve had fun shopping for his new shirt. We had to pull him away from the Patagonia fleece, but he finally managed to pick out a beautiful sweater for his romantic Valentine’s Day dinner at Zephrus on Saturday night.

I have this internal struggle. I believe childhood should be a time of magic and innocence; that’s why we pulled stakes and moved to Martha’s Vineyard afterall. I don’t want our children to want for anything. I don’t mean buying the newest latest and greatest the minute it hits the market (our children saved to buy their wii, after all) but by making sure they never think about being warm enough or being hungry.
By the same token I want them to understand how fortunate we are. We may be eating a lot more soups this winter but the kiddos don’t know we’ve tightened our budget.
We talk about giving during the December Holidays and then move on to what we affectionately call the ‘Candy Holidays’. We completely forget there are so many people who ‘do without’. So here comes the Momma-Moment: We’ve instituted a new tradition in our family. We’ve made every holiday a Giving Holiday. This spring we’re giving to the Island Food Pantry.
The Island Food Pantry’s proverbial cupboard is bare and there are many Island families who are not as fortunate as we. So while we’re making valentines for our friends and loved ones we’re also sharing the love through food donations. We did the big grocery shopping yesterday buying two or even three of something so we can share.
Won’t you join us in sharing the love this Valentine’s Day? Let’s all give Hallmark a run for their money and make this ‘Candy Holiday’ one that will warm a tummy and a heart. You don’t have to make the trip to Vineyard Haven to contribute; just place current and unopened boxed and canned food in the purple box found in food markets and houses of worship throughout the Island. We’ve all heard that phrase, The Way to the Heart is through the Stomach.

I consider myself a delicate lady for the most part; however this title tends to change when someone mentions the word “steak”. I absolutely adore a good steak and glass of pinot noir, which is why when the opportunity came to eat at Le Grenier, I threw off my ladylike gloves and grabbed my steak knife.
Le Grenier has been on Martha’s Vineyard for over 30 years and Chef Jean Dupon has been behind the pots and pans for much of that time. He is originally from France and has had the pleasure of filling two countries tummy’s with his delightful menu. Delicacies such as sweetbreads, scallops, quail and lamb populate the entries list and of course the steak au poivre.
I order one thing and one thing only when dining at Le Grenier and that is the steak au poivre. There is something that feels risky and scandalous about ordering a meal that includes lighting a pan of sauce on fire. My table companions enjoy the beef Wellington in a puff pastry that is so airy if you turn your back it may float to the ceiling.
The steak au poivre I order is cooked medium well and the sauce is lit on fire at your table so you can see the transformation from ingredients to delicious right before your eyes. The sauce is incredible and generously poured over the meat, plate and my jumpy fingers. The waitresses are pros and carry lighters with them everywhere in the restaurant. The meal literally melts in your mouth and I refuse to take part in any conversations at my table so that I can concentrate on my steak.
For dessert there are chocolate profiteroles to enjoy. Small puff pastries filled with vanilla ice-cream and drizzled with chocolate sauce. I want to live in this restaurant forever. This winter Chef Jean has transformed Thursday-Saturday nights into a dancing and dinner formula that will help you to burn some of the calories that you just ate. On those nights starting at 7pm it’s time to get disco fever and the only cure is to dance, dine and dream about coming back to Le Grenier.

When you live on Martha’s Vineyard, getting a new car can be a blessing and a curse. We tend to keep our cars much longer than necessary here. Sometimes they just break down and morph into a rusting hulk in your yard until you realize you’re not ever going to do the repairs and finally call the tow truck. An old car is a respected friend that fellow islanders recognize and wave to. It takes months of association before the waving resumes. And let’s not forget the personality defining decals and bumper stickers. The years of beach stickers plastered to the windows are the status symbols of the island. But repairs are expensive here. Gas is expensive here. Eventually you start visualizing your new car and the freedom from worrying about the failed inspection sticker or breaking down on a dark wooded road. A new gas efficient model would be so nice. YES! It’s time.
Taking your old car off the island on that final ferry ride is like the Eskimos pushing their aging parents out to sea on an ice flow. Sad but necessary. Driving the new car onto island soil for the first time is exhilarating, if not somewhat of a letdown. You are anonymous. No one waves. Who are you? You want to shout – IT’S ME! LOOK I HAVE A NEW CAR! Maybe the MV TIMES or GAZETTE should devote a weekly section with photos of new island cars and their owners. Until then I will dutifully sweep out the excess sand from my seat and look forward to my first beach sticker this summer. Hope I don’t back into a tree.

Last Sunday some friends and I had decided to celebrate a promotion by going to brunch. Hearing the rumor an Island favorite Chef Tony has recently ventured into the brunch business I suggested the Grill On Main (www.thegrillonmain.com). Everyone knows this Edgartown restaurant offers scrumptious dinners how can he go wrong with breakfast food?! What can I say? One word: AMAZING.
The selection and variety resulted in my eating three plates and wishing I could find room for a fourth. The choices seemed endless: fresh oysters on the half shell, shrimp cocktail, quiche, pancakes and eggs benedict with a hollandaise sauce that made you want to move to Europe and thank the good people of Holland for creating such an accomplishment. The chunky home-fries were cooked to perfection, crispy outer layer married to the fluffy core and crispy (and I mean crispy like a starched shirt crispy) bacon were the accessories that took the brunch from a meal to an experience.
I can’t say enough about the range of delicious offerings, there was a chocolate cake confection that was so delicious and rich I not only finished my portion but my table companions as well. Not to mention the chocolate covered strawberries which were the berry on my ‘Sunday’.
Tottle over to The Grill On Main next Sunday and treat yourself (and a Sweetie) to a post Valentine’s Brunch – you’ll fall in love all over again!

I hear everyone grumbling about Punxsutawney Phil but I tell you, I love the Vineyard winter! We haven’t checked off half the fun winter activities we enjoy. I love the cold, sunny days and the crystal clear nights. I’m hoping we’ll get another block of freezing days so we can Ice Skate on Seth’s Pond before the spring thaw. We keep meaning to head that way but our weekends tend to be so packed!
Vineyard Youth Tennis is having their annual Adult Round Robin Tennis Extravaganza and Silent Auction. Festivities begin Thursday afternoon with an exhibition match between top youth players then the games begin in earnest. There are so many great items in the Silent Auction to http://www.vineyardyouthtennis.org/ and check it out!
Friday is Opening Night for the Edgartown theatre production of “Seussical, The Musical.” We’re looking forward to a family night out that won’t break our budget.
I’m so glad we reserved our tickets because I hear families from all over the Island will attend.
