David
Welch, Photographer
David’s passions are photography and travel, and on his many sojourns to Latin America (he’s explored the two continents from Mexico to Argentina), Europe and Indonesia, he has enjoyed a variety of interesting outdoor activities and immersions with local cultures all the while capturing nature’s beauty and the human condition with his camera. From the rugged steeps of Patagonia to lengthy treks to the remote ruins of pre-Columbian American empires, David has always had his camera ready to document with an art-inspired photojournalist’s eye.
I
started photographing when I was 13. At the time, I was already involved with
oil painting, etching, silk-screening, ceramics, and drawing, which were instrumental
to the development of my sensitivity for texture, color, shape and design. I entered
Providence College as an art major, graduating in 1986 with a BA in photography.
The next several years I traveled extensively through Europe, inspired by all
it offered and the desire to photograph everything that moved me. In 1991 I attended
the New England School of Photography where I grounded myself in technique and
received a degree in editorial photography and color projects.
My photography
is instinctive. In any given moment I intuitively choose a specific technique,
be it focus, perspective, or choice of film that allows me to best capture the
image before me. I feel the essence of the scene and in that instant I let go
to a creative impulse guiding my choices of film, lens, stance and light illuminating
the scene in such a way that the soul of the picture emerges.
The Vineyard
has been essential to my creativity throughout my career and my life. Despite
my many photographic adventures around the world I continue to make the Vineyard
my home. It is a place where I find both solace and inspiration.

Louisas passion for art and photography
began at an early age. Throughout her childhood, she was enrolled in summer art
programs on Marthas Vineyard where she developed her appreciation for art
and photography. In addition, her family taught her to sail. By age 15, Louisa
was sailing competitively in Marthas Vineyard Sound regattas.
Although
accepted at the Rhode Island School of Design for painting and photography, Louisa
choose to major in Political Science and Chinese at The Catholic University of
America in Washington D.C. While at University, she also continued to study painting.
After completing University she choose a career in banking in New York City where
she simultaneously studied oil painting at Parsons School of Design and the Art
Student League of New York.
Her path returned her to sailing weekends on
Long Island Sound and eventually lead to sailing in the Americas Cup 2000
in New Zealand. She left her career in finance to pursue a childhood dream to
compete in the Worlds most prestigious sailing event. After the elimination
of her boat, Louisa picked up her camera and began capturing the event. Her knowledge
of sailing combined with her photography skills enabled her to anticipate and
capture key moments of the event.
Once again joined with the camera, Louisa
rekindled her love of photography and decided to make a career as a sport and
travel photographer. At major sporting events she can be found in either in a
helicopter, chase boat, or on the sidelines. She covers events such as the Olympics
2002, Americas Cup 2003, and the Around Alone Race 2003. Louisa is also
currently working on a classic yacht photography book of Vineyard Yachts and a
sailing documentary of the Volvo Ocean Race 2001-2002.
Louisa is based out
of Marthas Vineyard where she frequently exhibits her photography and contributes
to the local newspaper. In addition, Louisa takes family portraits and shoots
weddings. She also shoots video for promotional purposes.
She feels very
fortunate to combine her passion for sailing, travel, and art with her career
as a photographer.
