Whether it's the unique beauty of Martha's Vineyard, the almost ethereal light that bathes the beaches, or the emotional serenity that can be found here, Martha's Vineyard continues to attract a thriving and eclectic mix of artists who have been inspired and nurtured here for over 100 years.
Island painters, sculptors, potters and photographers display their works through a variety of galleries and local exhibitions - sometimes exclusively - providing a unique opportunity to buy art almost directly from the artist.
Artists such as Ray Ellis and Ovid Osborn Ward have been acknowledged for many years as accomplished painters of island images, commanding prices between $45,000 and $65,000 for original works. A limited edition print can cost a fraction of the price and still provide a good investment for the future.

A great opportunity to take advantage of just such a potential investment while supporting a local cause can be realized with the purchase of a signed copy of one of three limited edition watercolors by Ray Ellis. The prints depict the three prominent island lighthouses of Gay Head, Edgartown and East Chop in Oak Bluffs and proceeds will help the Museum to maintain the featured lighthouses. Prints are $250 each and may be purchased at the Martha's Vineyard Museum or ordered by calling 508-627-4441.
The Vineyard also offers numerous opportunities to purchase original work by lesser known artists who work in a variety of mediums. Dozens of galleries, from small spaces in barns and lofts to larger established galleries, can be found by driving from one end of the island to the other.
Flea markets, artisan festivals and shows hanging in galleries provide other outlets for work by Vineyard artists, check our calendar of events for details. Art surrounds you on Martha's Vineyard, so enjoy!
