Superb Waterfront Dining
Mediterranean is the passion of chef/owner Douglas Hewson and his wife, pastry chef/owner extraordinaire Leslie Hewson. Their approach is simple: the freshest of ingredients, native fish and produce and inspired preparation drawing upon the culinary delights and traditions of the Mediterranean region. The results are nothing sort of fantastic and combined with one of the best outdoor dining areas on the island make for a truly memorable Vineyard experience.

A recent visit to Mediterranean inspired this review by our Contributing Food Editor N.Joy Eating:
Midweek, my spouse and I decided to have dinner out with some friends. Unable to dine at the 6 pm or 8:30 pm seating offered at our usual spot, we decided to try something new: A quick call on the cell phone to confirm, and off we went to Mediterranean, one of the few waterfront dining establishments in Vineyard Haven.
Greeted quickly by the host, we were seated in the front room, overlooking the water and Vineyard Haven harbor. Regrettably, it was too cool for us to dine on the upstairs deck, which provides the best water view of any restaurant in Vineyard Haven. Indoors the windows were large and the view was outstanding, accented by the sound of waves that lapped on the beach in front of us. Studying the menu, we were all intrigued by the exotic ingredients listed in the dishes. While no stranger to ethnic foods, we were stumped and amused ourselves speculating on what the strange sounding words might be.

Haloumi salad, Harrisa Rubbed Tuna, Zarzuela caught our eye and made us wonder about these exotic ingredients... What is Haloumi? Who is Harrisa and how does she rub the tuna? Where did Zarzuela arrive from? Our server, Simone Rainaud, knew all the answers and made each choice sound so delectable that we ordered each one to sample. We ordered a salad of fried Haloumi, which is a sheep's milk cheese from Cypress, similar in texture to fresh Mozzerella. Harrisa Rubbed Tuna, a tuna steak rubbed with a North African spice and the Zarzuela, a Spanish fish stew, similar to a Bouillabaisse, but with a spicy kick to it. The fried Haloumi salad came on a Lavash flat bread "plate", a signature touch at Mediterranean. The food was excellent and everyone was well pleased with what they ordered. Portions were generous which allowed for tasting all around.
After such a delicious dinner, we could not wait to try the homemade desserts. All mouths dropped when they were delivered to the table. The Chocolate Pyramid stole the show. No doubt about it, this was the largest single desert that I have seen. Not only was it large enough to share generously, it was absolutely delicious. We did not leave a single morsel. The table to our left ordered a fresh fruit tart and it looked like it could have served a family. Again not a bite was left when they left the table.
Throughout the evening, the service complimented the food. Fresh silverware was brought after each course and the restaurant manager was always near by. She was attentive to our needs, friendly and helpful. Highlighting the evening was chef and owner Douglas Hewson making his rounds, table to table, checking with customers and discussing the intriguing menu. Doug's wife Leslie is the pastry chef, it is obvious that both she and Douglas take tremendous pride in their work.
With a premiere location for waterfront dining on the island, Mediterranean is now in it's fifth year. Freshness and quality are evident on every plate. Adding excellent service to the mix, this is a restaurant to put on your list.
