M.V. Kid Sitters is more than a babysitter service. This company, founded by two mothers, an attorney and a teacher, endeavors to provide trained child care for island visitors.
" I am often asked by friends and other summer visitors if I know a sitter for their kids," says Sandra Stone, one of the proprietors and a mother of two. " I have worked in various capacities on weddings on the island and often brides and their guests don't know where to turn for help with the kids, be it during the event or at the rehearsal dinner or other parties."
After brainstorming with partner, Lori Sue Herman (an attorney in Edgartown) and much research the two began this important service. The service is insured and the sitters follow a specific rules of conduct and safety. If needed, a nurse is on call for emergency assistance.
The sitters have CPR training and come to the client's venue - sitters have watched children at weddings, parties, rental homes and hotels. They have even supplied a sitter to watch a dog whom the owners did not feel comfortable leaving alone in a strange house.
All of the sitters have been carefully selected, some are teachers at Island schools, some are honor students at the Regional High School, others college students, parents and summer residents.
A recent client was a family here for two weeks with two small children with early bedtimes. By calling this service gave the parents the chance to go out to dinner, movies and gallery hopping, "This made our vacation into more than time with the kids - we had time with each other" said the happy dad.
"We have been renting on the island for several years and are unable to locate a sitter for our grandchildren," said a grandmother of three from the Boston area. "The sitter came to the house the night we needed her and it made for an easy night out with our adult children. I am hosting a party later this summer and will call this service to help with my grandchildren and a few other visiting kids during the party."
