...8/26/09 mvyradio reporting: Following a restful afternoon at Blue Heron Farm, President Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama headed out Tuesday evening around 5:30 pm. Their motorcade took the scenic route through Edgartown to the East Chop home of close friend Valerie Jarrett.  Neighbors and onlookers gathered at the top of East Chop Drive, where some guests were seen coming and going from a nearby house believed to be owned by John Payton, an attorney for the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund. The Obamas and Jarrett then headed to dinner at the Sweet Life Cafe on Circuit Avenue in Oak Bluffs, where they were joined by family friend Eric Whitaker and the President's sister, Maya Soetoro-ng.  Hundreds of people filled the streets hoping to catch a glimpse of the First Couple. The Obama's departed for home around 9:30 pm, waving to cheering crowds who bid them goodnight with shouts of "we love you" and "thank you for everything."

...8/25/09  This in from
mvyradio:   "President Obama wound up a full day of recreation yesterday by playing 18 rounds of golf at Farm Neck Golf Club in Oak Bluffs. Several crowds of people lined the roadside, waving and cheering as Obama's motorcade headed back up to his vacation rental in Chilmark shortly after 6 pm. Plans for the President for the remainder of the week include plenty of reading, as well as a lot of family down time. White House spokesman Bill Burton says despite rumors, the president has no plans to either golf with TIger Woods, or meet with Sen.Edward Kennedy at his Hyannisport home to possibly discuss  health care. Burton told reporters yesterday that the President is very happy to be back on the Island, and is especially appreciative of the Vineyard's beauty and the hospitality of its residents."

....8/24/09 The Obama's dined at Blue Heron Farm last night with a group that included White House advisor Valerie Jarrett. Today President Obama and wife Michelle started their day with tennis, the President plans on golfing this afternoon.

...8/23/09 President Obama and his family arrived on Martha's Vineyard mid-afternoon on Sunday.  Determined wellwishers dotted the route from the airport to the summer White House at Blue Heron Farm where the First Family remained for the first night of their vacation.

...The Vineyard Gazette announced in its Friday, August 21 edition that President Obama is scheduled to arrive "somewhere in a five hour window on Sunday afternoon."  The article went on to say that the President will be arriving by helicopter after Air Force One lands at Otis Air Force Base and that the MV Airport will be closed to the press and the public."

Though Martha’s Vineyard has been down this road before with the Clinton visits in the ‘90s, there is no sign of ‘been there, done that’ on the Martha's Vineyard. Instead the excitement is almost palpable, with evidence of community involvement everywhere. From art galleries to t-shirt shops, casual grocery line conversation to official greeters,  the Island is ready to welcome the Obamas to Martha’s Vineyard.

Martha's Vineyard Businesses Fete the Obamas

Obama Family Visits Martha's VineyardAbout a week ago, FoxNews.com reported that “The Crocker House Inn is arranging a Michelle Obama ‘welcome bag’ filled with Island delicacies and local flowers” and that Mocha Mott's, owner Tim Dobel has concocted the "Mochabama" -- a blend of dark and white chocolates. Over in Oak Bluffs the folks at Offshore Ale are busy brewing "Ale to the Chief" and Sharky's has concocted the 'Obamarita' made with First Fruit (mandarin oranges) pureed with lemon and lime sour mix, Sauza tequila, triple sec, and, in a nod to Hawaii, a spritz of pineapple juice.

But that’s just the beginning....

Over at Vin-Yips, Martha’s Vineyard’s own ‘howl’istically healthy, hand-made, home baked dog treats, Mona Rosenthal and baking partner Madi Coutts are busy mixing up extra batches of the treat’s Beefy Bo-Bama flavor, since we hear first dog Bo will get  to take a Vineyard vacation too. Grab yourself a Bo 'new dog in town' tee (also on sale at the Chilmark Flea Market) and you and your dog will be good to go.

Obama Family Vacation Martha's Vineyard

A Vineyard Tradition Continues

Carol MacManus, creator of President Clinton’s  now famous presidential muffin (cream cheese, strawberries & blueberries), is readying for the Obama arrival with an Obama muffin that was launched on August 1st in her Edgartown café/restaurant, Espresso Love.

Carol, who views the new president as a “health conscious kind of guy,” has created a muffin loaded with lots of good things: bananas, oats, whole wheat, raspberries, pineapple, macadamia nuts and coconut, the last 3 ingredients highlighting the president's connection to Hawaii.

The substantial muffin already has a loyal following.  Though Clinton discovered the red, white and blue presidential muffin during his second stay on Martha’s Vineyard, Carol has not yet determined how she’ll introduce President Obama to his namesake muffin. “I hope we’re able to do what we did with the Clinton’s...to feed them every morning but we’ll see. Right now I’m just so excited that the Obamas are coming, it’s such a gift.

If you want to taste test the Obama muffin, stop in at Espresso Love, behind the Courthouse, just off Main St in Edgartown. The muffins sell, as do all of Carol’s home-made muffins, for a stimulus-friendly $2.59 each.
