Season of the Witch: MV Celebrates Halloween |
Everybody on Island dresses up for Halloween. Well, maybe not everybody, but certainly more folks than you’d expect. Don’t be surprised to see the devil, Mickey Mouse or Goldilocks turn up at your bank, dentist or at the car repair.
Which Witch are You?
This level of involvement necessitates planning which means a visit to Shirley’s Hardware, the Vineyard’s Halloween Headquarters >more<.
A recent visit turned up over 50 wigs, 33 types of stockings, masks, makeup, fingernails, hats, boas, full costumes and more. To dress up your home, a visit to Rainy Day offers seasonal glassware, linens, candles and decorations. Even the Island thrift shops, supporting MV Community services in Vineyard Haven and the MV Boys and Girls Club in Edgartown, get into the spirit with vintage and not so vintage ephemera.

Trick or Treat!
How you celebrate depends on your age and predilections: On the weekend prior to Halloween, Edgartown business hosts trick or treaters as well as pumpkin carving and costume contests. Felix Neck gets into the act with animal mask and hat making for little ones and Shirley’s will be offering day long treats and hospitality.
On Halloween itself, kids flock to Skiff Avenue and Spring Street in Vineyard Haven, as well as other neighborhoods where homes are close together and occupied all year long.

Boo-gey the Night Away
No longer just a children’s holiday, Halloween is a great excuse to party. Outerland will host its annual holiday blow-out featuring the Boogies and costume parties are planned for many other locations Island-wide.
So grab your witches hat, hop on your Island broom and get ready for a screamingly good time. View calendar of events.
